About Yasa

YASA designs and manufactures axial flux electric motors and controllers for electric vehicles. Its motors use a proprietary yokeless and segmented armature, a design the company says is covered by over 150 patents.

Customers are vehicle manufacturers, including Ferrari, Lamborghini and Mercedes-AMG. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz Group, developing electric motors for the AMG.EA electric platform. It also offers Formula Student teams access to its motor technology.

YASA was founded in 2009 as a spin-out from Oxford University by Dr Tim Woolmer, who remains CTO. Its e-motor serial production facility in Kidlington, near Oxford, opened in 2018, and an upgraded factory in Yarnton, near Oxford, opened in 2025 with capacity to scale beyond 25,000 units per year. The controller development team is based in Welshpool, Wales. The company states it has over 400 employees.
