About Speakunique

SpeakUnique develops voice banking technology that creates a personalised synthetic voice for use in communication aids. Users record their voice through the website with a laptop and headset microphone. The voice can be used on Apple and Android devices through the SpeakUnique app and on specialist Windows communication devices. The company also develops vocal biomarkers to measure the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Services are Voice Build, which uses under 30 minutes of audio recordings; Voice Repair, for people whose speech is impaired at the time of recording; and Voice Design, for bespoke voices for people with no intelligible speech or voices based on old recordings. Customers are individuals living with conditions such as MND/ALS, MSA, cerebral palsy and head and neck cancer. Users can listen to samples of their voice before purchasing and downloading it, and funding is available for the synthetic voices.

SpeakUnique Limited was incorporated in 2018 and is headquartered in Glasgow. The company began in 2012 as a University of Edinburgh research project and formed in 2019 as a University of Edinburgh spin-out. Its team combines expertise in speech synthesis, human-computer interaction, and speech and language therapy. It lists a Software Engineer role as an open position.
