About Cockroach Labs

Cockroach Labs develops CockroachDB, a distributed SQL database that speaks the PostgreSQL wire protocol, and Cockroach Continuum, a database cloud that runs many isolated databases on shared or dedicated infrastructure. Continuum includes Aegis, an agent that observes the database estate and recommends changes; at launch Aegis is read-only and does not change configuration, schema, indexes or data.

Its customers are organisations running workloads that cannot fail, such as banks, payment networks, health systems and identity infrastructure; the website also cites DoorDash and OpenAI as users. Revenue comes from cloud subscriptions billed per vCPU-hour, in two editions: Standard on shared infrastructure and Mission Critical on dedicated infrastructure. New Cloud organisations get a 30-day free trial with $400 in credit.

The company was founded in 2015 by three former Google engineers, Spencer Kimball, Peter Mattis and Ben Darnell. The website reports $633M raised in total.
