QS Qualität und Sicherheit GmbH runs the QS quality assurance scheme for fresh food, covering every stage of the food chain from production and processing to marketing. Independent auditors from certification bodies inspect participants against published requirements, and products that pass are labelled with the blue QS certification mark.
Scheme participants include farms, slaughterhouses, processors, wholesalers and food retailers, including businesses from abroad. The company is an industry-funded initiative founded in 2001 by representatives of the German meat production stages. The website lists around 165,000 system partners, more than 23,000 food retail branches that sell QS-labelled products, and modules such as QS-Sojaplus, the QS-Klimaplattform and a voluntary sustainability inspection.
The QS-Akademie runs online seminars, and the company publishes the magazine qualitas. on quality assurance. It lists openings for auditors in the QS system and accepts unsolicited applications.
