About Protean Electric

Protean Electric develops in-wheel motor technology under the ProteanDrive name. Its motors integrate power electronics and digital control, and can be packaged with a friction brake as a single product. Direct drive removes the need for gears, differentials and drive-shafts.

Customers are vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators. Solutions cover passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and connected and autonomous vehicles. Named customers and partners on the website include MAHLE and Local Motors, and news items mention work with Renault Group on the Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

Protean was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Farnham, United Kingdom. The company reports over 150 people globally, over 200 patents and 130 pending. It has been acquired by NEVS/Evergrande (2019) and BEDEO (2021), and its news section reports an acquisition by EXEDY Corporation. Open roles include mechanical design, power electronics, systems and applications engineering.

Product: ProteanDrive in-wheel motors with integrated power electronics, digital control and optional friction brakes.
