About Modern Synthesis
Modern Synthesis develops bio-based materials based on cellulose and other natural biopolymers, designed as drop-in replacements for petrochemical-based materials. Its portfolio ranges from bio-based coating resins to finished composites, including a textile coating system.
Its customers are manufacturers and brands. The company works with supply chain partners to bring its materials to market, and with brands in fashion and automotive to develop applications for them. Collaborations include bags made with GANNI and BEEN London.
The company was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in London. Its co-founders are Dr. Ben Reeve (CTO) and Jen Keane (CEO). In February 2025 it announced a $5.5 million funding round led by Extantia Capital, with participation from Artesian and Collaborative Fund, to expand production at its pilot facility.
Product: Bio-based coated textiles, coating resins and composites built on cellulose, designed to run on standard textile manufacturing lines.
