About Maculaser
Maculaser develops a patented, temperature-controlled retinal heating treatment. Local heating is intended to trigger the heat shock response in retinal tissue, to protect cells and support their survival, with the aim of preventing progression of retinal disorders.
The therapy targets age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). The company is in clinical development: it plans clinical studies covering wet and dry AMD and macular edemas and is working toward efficacy evaluations.
Maculaser was founded in 2020 and is headquartered in Espoo, Finland. Its research originates at Aalto University, where work on the technology has been carried out since 2013. In May 2026 ZEISS Ventures joined a funding round co-led with M2Care. The company is also part of PhotonMed, a €32 million EU-funded initiative under the Chips Joint Undertaking. It lists a general application for open positions.
