About Itärata

Itärata Oy is a project company planning the Itärata railway, a new line that connects Porvoo with the Helsinki metropolitan area and provides more direct and faster rail links through Kouvola, Joensuu and Kuopio to eastern Finland. The company states that about 2 million people live in the line's area of influence across seven regions.

Planning is carried out together with several planning partners, municipalities and cities, and other stakeholders. Landowners, tenants and other land users are engaged during field surveys, which the company runs along the route.

Itärata Oy was founded in 2022 and is registered in Helsinki. Planning phases are an environmental impact assessment in 2024–2026, a general plan in 2026–2028 and a track plan in 2028–2031. The line is planned to be feasible to build by the end of the 2030s.
