IDOS, the German Institute of Development and Sustainability, is a research institute and think tank. It conducts empirical, theory-based and application-oriented research on the relationship between sustainability and development, covering areas such as energy, transport, conflict, agriculture and natural resources, demography and health. The research is organised in four departments.

It offers independent, research-based policy advice to decision-makers in Germany, Europe, other countries and world regions, and at global level, including at the UN, G7 and G20. It also runs training formats: a Postgraduate Programme for Sustainability Cooperation, the Managing Global Governance programme, the Shaping Futures Academy for early-career researchers from African partner countries, and a dual and semi-structured doctoral programme. The institute is institutionally funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and, as a member of the Johannes Rau Research Community, by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The institute was founded in 1964 as the Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) with its seat in Berlin, moved to Bonn in 2000 and was renamed IDOS in 2022. It has about 200 staff, two-thirds of them in research, and is led by Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge. Its current job listing is for a Social Media Manager.
