About Energiestro
Energiestro develops flywheel energy storage technology, based on a prestressed concrete flywheel called VOSS (Volant de Stockage Solaire). The company aims to store electricity at a lower cost than batteries.
Target applications include self-consumption for buildings with solar panels, smoothing intermittent renewable generation, power for isolated sites such as GSM telecom relays and homes, rural electrification in developing countries, and grid frequency regulation. The company describes its flywheel as suited to large solar plants in desert areas.
Energiestro was founded in 2001 and is headquartered in Essert, France. It is supported by BPI France and the regions Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Centre-Val de Loire. It won the Concours Mondial d'Innovation 2030 (2014), the EDF PULSE contest (2015) and the Shell-liveWire contest (2018), and received the European Commission Seal of Excellence in 2016. The VOSS project received funding under the Horizon 2020 programme.
