documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH organises the periodic documenta exhibitions of contemporary art and operates the Fridericianum, the documenta archiv and the documenta Halle. Under the umbrella of documenta gGmbH, these institutions realise exhibitions and events, conduct research, and archive the knowledge produced around documenta.
The company is a non-profit organisation with the City of Kassel and the State of Hesse as shareholders. The International Friends of documenta e. V. brings together arts enthusiasts who support its work. Its audience includes visitors to exhibitions and events at its institutions.
The first documenta opened in Kassel on 15 July 1955, founded by Arnold Bode, and the exhibition cycle has been organised since 1959 by a limited liability company. A total of 15 editions have taken place so far, and documenta 16 is in preparation for opening in Kassel in 2027 under artistic director Naomi Beckwith.
