About Descartes Underwriting
Descartes Underwriting is a global managing general agent that designs parametric insurance products against climate and emerging risks, including tropical cyclones, floods, hail, drought, extreme temperatures and cyber. Policies pay out when a predefined trigger, such as rainfall, temperature or wind speed, is met, without on-site loss adjustment. Trigger indices are derived and back-tested from datasets including satellite imagery, climate models and IoT sensors.
Its customers are corporate insurance brokers, who place Descartes products with corporates and public entities across sectors such as agriculture, construction, data centres, renewable energy, retail and manufacturing. The company states that it has more than 300 broker firms as clients and has covered more than 600 large corporations and public entities. Its products are backed by A+ rated insurers, and it operates alongside Descartes Insurance, a licensed insurer in Europe.
Descartes was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in Paris. The company reports 20+ offices in 10 countries, more than 250 employees and more than 150 experts in climatology, data, engineering and underwriting.
