About biolab.si

The Bioinformatics Laboratory is a research group at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana. It works in data science, combining machine learning, data visualization, exploratory data analysis and explainable artificial intelligence. The lab develops Orange, an open-source machine learning and data visualization suite that also offers a visual programming environment.

The lab applies these methods to molecular biology and biomedicine, anthropology, psychology, spectroscopy, image and network analytics, and business analytics. The site names partner institutions including Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard University, SOLEIL, University of Pavia, Higher School of Economics in Moscow and the Francis Crick Institute. Its activities are listed as research projects, teaching, and seminars and workshops for state institutions and in-company training; the site does not describe a commercial revenue model.

The faculty was founded in 1996 and is a full member of the University of Ljubljana, which was founded in 1919. The faculty has been located in Brdo, on the outskirts of Ljubljana, since 2014. Its careers page lists research and project-based positions across several laboratories, including roles in quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

Product: Orange, an open-source machine learning and data visualization suite with a visual programming environment, plus related research methods and teaching.
